Being one of the world economic leader and rapidly growing market, in the past several years, China has changed  its  business model. Low-cost production moves away from China, and China by creating higher-skilled manufacturing jobs, become more innovative and develops high-tech production.

This course provides an overview of main business and entrepreneurship models in China. It  focuses on the main patterns of modern Chinese business culture, management  and entrepreneurship, forms, obstacles and opportunities for foreign investments, establishing join ventures, wholly foreign owned enterprises, representative offices, China market entry and growth, etc. 

This course also concentrates on national identity in China, cross-cultural dialogues, misunderstanding in  conducting business in China. We will also discuss sociopolitical risks and risk-management, decision  making in China, economic factors that affect the costs of doing business in China; market entry considerations, bookkeeping and audit, taxation, mergers & acquisitions, due diligence, human resource and staff recruitment process, employing foreign nationals in China, strategies for  repatriating profit from China  using China Free trade zones and double-tax agreements, supply chain strategies 

Topics will also include business culture, protocol and  business customs, traditions, dress, gifts, formal and informal communication, emotional dimension of business behavior in China, psychological estimation of Chinese partners,  China’s market potential and hot industries; its culture and people; current obstacles and opportunities in logistics; the historical and current problems faced by the economy; economic and political factors that affect the costs of doing business in China, government relations, regulatory compliance and stakeholder alignment. We will focuses in several case studies of regional business models: Shanghai free trade zone, Beijing, Ningbo, Guangzhou, Chongqing, Harbin, etc.

Several case study focusing on China’s regional business diversity and local business traditions, way of negotiations are  incorporated into this course. We will also analyze common situations and common mistakes that arise when conducting business in China.

Doing Business in South East Asia 

Today South-East Asia (ASEAN)  is one of the most developing region of the world. With its rising costs, China is no longer the go to destination for many businesses, in the past several years, a growing number of businesses have relocated their operations from China to Indonesia, Malaysia, Vietnam in an attempt to escape rising costs and an increasingly complex regulatory environment. This region became very attractive for sourcing and investments, Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines are surging ahead of their regional neighbors, with FDI increases of 17, 19 and 20.4 percent, respectively 

The course covers three main topics: general economic situation, entrepreneurship and main trends of the development of SA States to 2020; practical patterns of doing business, investments and sourcing in SE Asia; business culture and etiquette in SE Asia. In particular we will discuss and compare business models in Indonesia, Malaysia, Vietnam, the Philippines, Myanmar, Singapore. 

The course will concentrates on the general economic situation in SA Asia, geographical and logistical advantages, possibilities for foreign or join companies, the investments to SE Asia, export & import industries, trade positions of ASEAN countries in Asia, political and economic risks, domestic restrictions for foreign companies. We will discuss several practical questions: how to establish a trading or manufacturing company, import and export licensing procedures and duties, choosing the right location and the right sourcing model, e-commerce, real estate market, etc.  We will focus on  different models of companies in SE Asia, including limited liability company, trading company, service company, etc.

In the part of business culture  we will discuss formal and informal protocol, negotiations, dresses, gifts, establishing of friendly relations, national business and everyday customs, festivals and way of life for foreigners and expats in SE Asia
